Court takes suo motu notice of Porayar roof collapse

The Madras High Court on Monday took suo motu notice of the death of eight Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) employees when the roof of a room at Porayar bus depot in Nagapattinam district collapsed on October 20 and ordered inspection of all buildings under the corporation’s control.

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar agreed to take up the issue as a suo motu public interest litigation petition after advocate R.Y. George Williams produced a few newspaper clippings on the incident, accusing the officials of not having taken any concrete action despite loss of eight lives. Passing interim orders , the judges directed TNSTC officials to inspect all buildings under its control and ensured that they were safe. It was also ordered that the families of those who had died should be compensated adequately and the State must bear the treatment expenses of the injured.
