The customers of uzhavar sandhai at Singanallur and the farmers selling their commodities there today gheraoed the agricultural officer present at the market alleging that middlemen are playing havoc with the system in the garb of agriculturists by selling vegetables at the market rate there.
Singanallur uzhavar sandhai is one of the premier vegetable markets in the State. It has been catering to a number of regions in and around Singanallur.
The customers recently found out that some of the rates quoted at the market by some traders was virtually equivalent to that of the one obtaining outside the uzhavar sandhai and not as cheap as it used to be. The rates were much more than the price list displayed at the shandy. Besides, they were interfering in the retail trade.
Today when the customers found that some of the traders were selling at rates higher than what was put up on the board, they complained to the officer of the uzhavar sandhai, Stephen, and picked up an argument with him.
They demanded all the middlemen should be removed from the shandy and the vegetables should be sold as per the price list displayed. This caused some commotion for some time.
