Muthannan Kulam, a veritable ‘Akshaya Patra’ of Garbage

Like the ‘Akshaya Patra’ in which food will be filled to the brim however much one takes from it, Muthannan Kulam, seems to be always full of garbage and plastic waste in spite of regular cleaning up by volunteers and voluntary organizations, thanks to the insensitive attitude of the public.

While the tank appears to be full of water, the ground water level in that area has not risen because the plastic waste is blocking the percolation. The public’s generosity seems to exceed limits in throwing garbage into the tank. Volunteers are cleaning up every week, but there is no reduction in the garbage level. Therefore it is proposed to create awareness among the public in the coming weeks, with the co operation of all the government departments.

💧The cleaning up work sees 37th week💧

Plastic bags and garbage discarded by insensitive people are swimming in the tank in which fish, frogs and snakes should be happily swimming. In today’s field work, more than fifty volunteers participated and removed garbage weighing 5 tonnes.

The cleaning up work was undertaken at Muthannan Kulam between 7.00 a.m. to 9.30. a.m., today. This programme was organized by ‘Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu’, a body that works towards protecting the tanks in Coimbatore and Environmentalist Foundation of India, Coimbatore. State Bank of India, Coimbatore Corporation and Rotary Club of Coimbatore Millennium participated in this programme.

The organisers have expressed their heart-felt gratitude to Hotel Anandhas, which is giving free refreshment every week to the volunteers.
