To choose the right candidate

Experts come out with quality check forms.

“What is the point in casting our vote? Does any candidate bring about a change?” this is a common reason that many eligible voters have if asked why they refrained from exercising their right. But, there is always a possibility to identify the right candidate. “We make quality check for products right from gold to groceries. So, should we not have a quality check for our candidates?”, asks CGS Manion, co-ordinator for C4TN (Coimbatore for Tamil Nadu).

The organisation spoke to 5,220 people and experts and has come out with a quality check form. Voters can choose three candidates and evaluate them on a scale of one to five for 25 parameters. This includes transparency, technology skills, vision, knowledge of the schemes, and educational qualifications. These are only guidelines that help the electorate choose the right candidate. It is candidate-specific and not party specific.

The form (in English and Tamil) is available on Facebook and is also shared on WhatsApp. “We plan to reach out to three crore voters,” he says. Coimbatore South and Singanallur are two Assembly constituencies in the city that saw low voter turnout last year. The forms will be distributed in gated communities and individual houses in these areas. Some of the candidates have also used the form to reach out to the voters saying they score high on several parameters.

The organisation will also release an audio clip, emphasising on voting. Further, four or five days before the elections it will publish a comparative chart of candidates. This will help voters judge the candidates. The idea behind this three-part exercise is to encourage more voters to go to the polling booths, he says.

The form is available on Facebook and is also shared on WhatsApp.
