New insurance schemes for handloom weavers

An insurance scheme by name, ‘Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana’ (‘Bunkar’ means weaver) is being implemented by the Central and State governments in association with Life Insurance of India. Under this scheme, compensation is paid for natural death or permanent handicap/partial handicap, due to accident.

Under this scheme, even those handloom weavers, who do not belong to the Co-operative Organisations and those who do allied work connected to the handloom industry are benefited.

The Central Government is going to implement two more Insurance schemes - ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevanjothi Bima Yojana’ and ‘Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana’ from the year 2017-2018.

Under this, if a weaver happens to die between the ages of 18 and 50, insurance amount amounting to Rs.2,00,000/- will be given. Insurance amount amounting to Rs.2,00,000/-, and Rs.1,00,000/- will be given respectively for a permanent handicap and partial handicap due to accident.

The weavers need not pay any premium for being included in this scheme.

Eligible handloom weavers and those engaged in allied jobs relating to handloom industry, must meet the Assistant Director of Handloom and Textiles on or before Oct 27. at the address given below. They should carry their photographs, bank account number and the proofs for having attached their aadhaar cards with their bank accounts and also the certificate that he/she is a weaver.
