Coimbatore Corporation has introduced alternative bio-compostable bags to replace plastic bags in the city.
Today, at a meeting held at Coimbatore smart City office, the Managing Director of Coimbatore Smart City K.Vijayakarthikeyan introduced the eco-friendly bags and encouraged Swachh Bharat ambassadors to hold an expo of eco-friendly packaging under the banner "My bag my shopping expo".
Hotel Owners Association of Coimbatore and Caterers' Association of Coimbatore took a pledge in the meeting, to switch over to eco-friendly packing materials in all respects in next three months. It is to be noted that Annapoorna group of hotels and Sri Krishna Sweets switched over to eco-friendly paper bags and bio-compostable bags from this Deepavali.
Later a workshop was conducted by Indian Plastic Institute Coimbatore Chapter and Roots Industries for plastic bag manufacturers on manufacturing bio-compostable bags using their existing machines.
Simultaneously, plastic bags of less than 50 microns were also seized and traders were fined by corporation officials, says a press release.
