Protest over removal of names from voters list

Removal of names of more than 80 persons from the final voters list, citing that they were dead, spread shock and surprise among those voters in Sulur Town Panchayat on Thursday.

Sulur Town Panchayat president S. Thangaraj claimed that all the voters were supporters of the AIADMK and claimed that political vendetta was the reason behind the incident.

According to Mr. Thangaraj, the persons whose names were removed from the voters list released on April 29 included two AIADMK councillors in the local body and also a member of his family.

It is learnt that their names were removed as someone played mischief by submitting ‘Form 7’ (for removal of names) online.

One of the affected persons said that their names would not have been removed if the booth level officers had conducted a proper inspection at the houses of the persons for whom ‘Form 7’ was submitted.

Seeking inclusion of their names in the voters list and take action against the mischief monger, they petitioned the returning officer of Sulur Assembly segment, district electoral officer and also mailed the petition to the Election Commission.

Responding to the incident, District Revenue Officer T. Christuraj said that they had received a complaint and were inquiring the booth level officers concerned.

He said that action would be taken against those found guilty of not following the necessary steps for deletion of names.
