Three men arrested for rape of minor girl

Three corporation sweepers, from Ukkadam, were arrested on Thursday for raping a 17-year-old girl. The men had lured her into one of their homes and raped her last week. While two of them raped her, the third one videographed the incident and tried to blackmail her with it. The men have been remanded to judicial custody.

The accused have been identified as Prakash Murugan, Prakash Nagaraj and Manivannan Selvaraj.

According to police, Prakash Nagaraj, a temporary sweeper with the civic body, had met the 17-year-old girl two months ago and had fallen in love. The girl, who had completed her Class 10 exams a year ago, had subsequently dropped out of school. "Prakash Nagaraj and the minor reside in CMC Colony. They got to know each other on the street," said D Veerammal, inspector of All Women Police Station, West, R S Puram.

On Thursday, April 28, Prakash Nagaraj who was reportedly drunk, lured the girl into Prakash Murugan's house on State Highways Road in Ukkadam. "His friends Murugan and Selvaraj, who were drunk as well, were also there," said Veerammal. As Murugan and Nagaraj raped her, Selvaraj videotaped the crime. He threatened to make the video public if she told anyone about the incident.

The girl's parents filed a complaint only on Wednesday afternoon, after she told them what had happened. "The minor girl seemed very depressed. Only after her parents questioned her repeatedly, did she talk to them about what had happened. The next day, the parents filed a complaint," said the inspector.

On investigation, the police learnt that Selvaraj's phone did not have video recording facility. He had just been making empty threats. Both Murugan and Selvaraj are married, but their wives had left them. "While Murugan's wife divorced him two years ago, Selvaraj's wife did not return home after she left to her parents'place for delivery two years ago," said Veerammal. Both don't have any previous criminal record.

The three men have been remanded to judicial custody and the police are enquiring further.
