Around 200 volunteers from Kovaikulangal Pathugappu Amaippu, Environmental Foundation of India and VWR Internationals joined hands with Corporation today to remove plastic waste and debris from Muthannan Kulam, a tank which is located near Gandhipark.

Muthannankulam receives water from Chitiraisavadi dam and Maruthamalai trough. It holds water all through the year and excess water from the pond flows towards Selvachinatamani pond through channels. The major issue here is plastic waste and debris dumped near the pond blocks the channel and blocks water flow. So there is an alarming slump in ground water level around the pond.

"As 36th week of our initiative, we have cleared three lorries of waste from the pond today. Corporation has provided a JCB and trucks to remove the waste. Most of the wastes are non degradable wastes that block the water flow. Idles madeup of plaster of paris are dissolved here; actually they are the main reason for water pollution here" said Manikandan from Kovai Kulangal Pathugapu Amaippu.

He also added that this initiative also created awareness among the residents near the pond to avoid dumping wastes in the water bodies.
