Two Special Police teams have been formed to prevent crimes in crowded places such as busy shopping areas in and around Town Hall and Gandhipuram, in the city in view of the Diwali celebrations, said P.Perumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Prevention).
The DCP pointed out that when people congregate in huge numbers for Diwali shopping anti-social elements could indulge in crimes such as picking the pockets and stealing their belongings. To prevent such incidents, two police teams in civil clothes would be deputed. in these busy shopping areas.
"Each special team would consist of six plain clothes policemen and and they would be deputed in crowded shopping places", the DCP said.
In addition, three other special police teams, one each to check house-breaks, vehicle thefts and chain snatching in the city have also been formed to check such incidents on the festival eve.
