Mermaid out of a pothole: Artist creates 'street art' to highlight Bengaluru's road woes

The IT capital of India grapples with nearly 16,000 potholes and there is an artist doing his bit to attract the attention of civic authorities to them.

Baadal Nanjundaswamy, a well-known artist who shot to fame a couple of years ago when he planted a life-size model of a crocodile on a 12-feet pothole is at his best again. This time he transformed a water pool on the road into a mermaid’s pool with a live model Sonu Gowda posing as sea mermaid.

Bengaluru has seen its wettest September this year in nearly a decade, and the rains have continued well into October. Baadal chose, for his art, a prominent intersection near the Parade Ground, just a stone's throw from the bustling MG Road, where he created this pond -- this particular pothole has been water-logged for nearly a month and has been a traffic-stopper every day.

The pothole art, of course, made it another traffic-stopper during peak hours on Friday morning, with office-goers gawking at the mermaid on the streets.
