The body of the female constable committed suicide last Saturday is yet to be cremated and her husband on Wednesday said the last rites would be performed only after a CBI probe was ordered into her death.
A Gayathri, attached to Dharapuram police station, had on April 29 committed suicide by consuming poison. She did not leave any suicide note, but her husband and family members had been alleging that she took the extreme step fed up with harassment by her senior woman officer.
Arumugham, Gayathri's husband, said he wanted a CBI probe into the case. "On April 29 at 9.20pm, when I spoke to Gayathri, she told me that she was scolded by deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Dharapuram, Jereena Begum. And after that the only information I got was about her death. What do you want me to make out of this?" he asked.
Arumugham said he was worried that the police department might try to play down the case. "I will accept her body only after a CBI probe is ordered into the case," he said.
Arumugham said Gayathri had been working at the Dharapuram all-woman police station for over two and a half years.
"Jareena Begum was posted there four months back. She was appointed to work under the DSP 15 days back and she often complained about the torture she underwent," he said. He alleged that Gayathri was forced to do various personal chores of senior official and she was unhappy about it. "I just want the truth to come out," he said.
Tirupur SP refused to comment on the matter. DSP Jareena was also contacted, but in vain. Some sources in the police department told TOI that a few months back, Gayathri was accused of being friends with a murder accused and the DSP had recently questioned her about it. They feel Gayathri might have committed suicide as she was rebuked over the matter.
But Arumugham said he was aware about the relationship. "There is no truth in these allegations. Why was no action initiated against a police official involved with a murder accused? Or for that matter, why her husband wasn't informed about the same? They are just trying to hide the truth," he said.
