The farmers of Mayikal and Kurumpalayam village allege that lack of maintenance and renovation works carried out by the Government in the vital small tanks and check dams has led to millions of liters of rain water going waste.
The said small tanks (kuttais) and its checkdams are situated one in Mayilkal and two in Kurumpalayam. Long neglect of these vital water bodies have led to farmers abandoning farming practices and migrating to city in search of employment.

The last ditch effort to save these kuttais by farmers who joined hands and took up renovation of the said check dams have also gone in vain.

Manikandan of NGO Kovai Kulangal Pathukaapu Amaippu while speaking to SimpliCity said that "the Public works department which is vested with the renovation of the tanks and its check dams cited lack of funds to carry out renovation. The sudden breaches due to flooding has caused immense wastage of water which should have been conserved and stored in the dam".
"Funds to the tune of Rs.25 lakhs have been allocated for renovation of tanks in the district , but this three tanks would need at least Rs.25 lakhs for renovation" this has been the refrain of the PWD officials when farmers approached them with the appeal to renovate the water bodies said Manikandan.
"If PWD expedites its measures to renovate these small tanks (kuttais) before North East monsoon then it would be largely helpful for the farming community" Manikandan said.
