Chinnavedampatti Lake, a life line of farmers and city denizens awaiting renovation for long.

The Chinnavedampatti Lake, a life line of farmers situated in North Coimbatore is awaiting renovation for long. Even after the bountiful monsoon, the storage level in this vital water body has not been substantial as feeder channels of this lake are in a degraded condition in Rajavaikkal and the adjacent Kanuvai check dam.

Attributing the apathetic condition of the lake to encroachments and lack of maintenance of the section of Rajavaikkal which could not supply waters leading to the dismal storage levels, realized in the lake, the city environmentalists including youth movements have sworn to restore and renovate the degraded water body its original glory.

“The shutters in Rajavaikkal in Kanuvai check dam are out of repair and it doesn’t help for to maintain a good storage level in Chinnavedampatti Lake, which was created as a flood barrage for the Sanganur odai” say The Chinnavedampatti lake restoration committee

To revive the vital water body, the Chinnavedampatti Ayakut farmers’ association president Kalidas, Kovai Kulangal Pathukaapu Amaippu and Kouskika river renovation committee have jointly appealed to the Government to renovate the water body which has fallen on evil days due to poor storage.

The water table in Saravanampatti, an IT and educational hub in the city would improve if the storage of Chinnavedampatti Lake is improved say environmentalists.

Thanks to the joint efforts made by the city’s environmentalists, the Public Works Department has prepared Rs.20 lakh draft proposal for to renovate the vital lake. "Restoration of Rajavaikkal and Kanuvai dam would be taken up to help maintain a good storage level in the lake" say PWD officials.

The Chinna vedampatti restoration committee has also appealed to the city corporation to include the renovation and upkeep of Chinnavedampatti Lake under the Smart city mission to give it a new lease of life.
