Close to 3,650 trees will be planted in Coimbatore Central Prison as a part of Isha's environmental initiative Project GreenHands (PGH).
Dr. C. Sylendra Babu IPS, Additional Director General of Police/Inspector General of prisons presided over the launch function who also planted a sapling in front of the prison gates. R. Arivudainambi, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Coimbatore and M. Senthil Kumar, Superintendent of Prisons were also presented during the event.

Around 3000 Timber varieties such as Teak, Mahogany, Rosewood, Red Sanders, Vengai, Khaya, Manjal Kadambu and 650 native fruit saplings varieties such as Lemon, Amla, Jackfruit, Guava, Pomegranate, Gooseberry, Wood Apple have been provided by Isha.

"The above mentioned saplings were grown in Isha nurseries in a 100% organic way thus increasing the nutritional value of fruit saplings. Once the planted trees begin to bear fruits, a significant percentage of the nutritional requirement of the prison inmates can be met from the produce of the fruit trees. Volunteers from the green initiative programme will train the inmates of the prison to plant and maintain the saplings", say the organisers of the initiative.
