Police arrested over 500 protesting opposition party cadres who staged a massive picketing agitation against steep hike in taxes levied and collected by City Corporation even to extend basic amenities and services to the people.
The opposition parties led by DMK cadres staged a massive picketing agitation in front of the City Corporation office and shouted slogans against the anti- people measures of the civic body for levying oppressive taxes.
Demanding to roll back the present new taxation regime implemented by the City Corporation, the cadres led by N. Karthik, Singanallur legislator pointed out that additional taxes have been levied for garbage collection from Rs.20 to Rs.200 and an additional security deposit is collected from Rs.2,000 to Rs.7,500 for drinking water connections.
The property tax which has been levied for the past 13.5 years should reevaluated and taxes reduced accordingly, The opposition party cadres which included , DMK, Congress, CPM, VCK, and Aadhi Tamilar Peravai took part in the agitation.
