The mushrooming encroachements in Coimbatore channel, a feeder channel for Periyakulam has prevented the free flow of water due to which the storage level in the Peiryakulam has suffered.
Even though the shutters were partially opened in Coimbatore check dam, as the narrow channel doesn't not have the carrying capacity due to shrunken nature.
"The people living on the banks which are under enrcroachment would be affected by flooding , if the more waters enters the channel" said Manikantan of Kovai Kulangal Pathukaapu Amaippu.
“The two meter long shutters were only partially opened, after the rains which resulted in poor water flow, to Periya kulam. The mushrooming encroachments, and the real estate development near the banks are under constant threat of flooding, if the shutters are opened fully “the activist said.
The renovation of the channel was carried out partially due to encroachments” allege the activist, who want a thorough overhaul and renovation of the channel and eviction of encroachments in channel lands.
When Simplicity sought the view of the officials in the civic body, they said the corporation has only carried out the renovation. The neighboring road and impediments come under Highways department, thus proving that lack of interdepartmental coordination is a bane for finding solutions to many outstanding problems.
