Alleging large scale violation of the model code of conduct by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), State vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and candidate for Coimbatore South Assembly Segment Vanathi Srinivasan petitioned the district electoral officer on Sunday.
AIADMK cadre made elaborate arrangements for the election campaign in which the party’s General Secretary and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa addressed at the CODISSIA trade fair grounds on Sunday evening. The party had decorated the road with huge banners from the airport to the meeting venue.
Ms. Srinivasan in her petition pointed out that no decorations should be made beyond a distance of 100 meters, from the meeting venue. She claimed that decorations and arrangements made by the AIADMK violated the poll code. She also claimed that the AIADMK cadre had also damaged the road by drilling holes.
An election official said that six teams were sent to the meeting venue to check for violations and expenditure for the meeting.
Based on the report from the Returning Officer of Kavundampalayam, action will be taken if the charges were found true, the official added.
Traffic was disrupted on the Avinashi Road for a couple of hours in the evening as the road was blocked for the Chief Minister’s programme, on security grounds. It forced the public to undergo hardships as there was no prior intimation on such diversions.
