The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has provided earth movers to clear out the debris from the Raja Vaaikal canal here on Tuesday.

The 6.5 km canal extending from Aathupalam in the city till the Vellalore tank was filled with encroachments and was recently cleared after stern representations from the Kovai Kulangal Paathukaappu Amaippu.

Though the most of the encroachments, largely houses, were cleared from the canal, the debris left out during the eviction silted on the lake blocking free passage to water and excess rains in the recent monsoon made situations worse as water clogged in the canal in areas where encroachments were cleared.

In order to remove the debris, volunteers from the Kovai Kulangal Paathukaappu Amaippu used earth movers since Monday and tried to allow free passage to water. Locals had also joined the movement to allow the water to flow till the dried up Vellalore tank.

On Tuesday however, CCMC officials decided to throw in help by providing two earth movers and a team consisting of officials from the Town Planning and Public Works Departments and three earth movers including one from the organisation have been deployed to clear the debris.
