Protesting against steep hike in taxes levied by CCMC for extending basic amenities and services, the opposition party cadres staged an agitation in all 100 wards of the city, and over 100 cadres courted arrest.
The massive protest led in all 100 wards created a flutter in the city as all major parties joined their hands against the City Corporation. The protestors also pointed that due to delay in local body elections, several issues including proper water supply, potholes, drainage, removal of wastes etc remain unattended.
N. Karthik, Singanallur Legislator who led the protest in Avarampalayam alleged that "The city corporation has levied additional taxes for garbage collection, UGDS connections including the additional deposits for drinking water connections. Such steep increase in taxes are a huge burden to the citizens."
"While most of the wards are ill-maintained and suffering from poor sanitary conditions, levying additional taxes doesn't make any sense" he said.

Urging the civic body to give up additional taxes on its denizens, the protesters from DMK, congress, CPI, CPM and VCK raised slogans against the Corporation and apprised that a series of protests would be organized until the civic body rolls back its new taxation regime.
Similar protests were held at the Town Hall area led by DMK Youth Wing in front of the Corporation office. Close to 47 people were arrested by the police.
