68 Paise Cheques For PM Modi on His 68th Birthday: Rayalaseema Farmers’ Unique Way of Protest

To register their dissent in a noticeable manner, farmers of Kurnool district in Rayalaseema region sent 68 paise cheques to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as gift on his 68th birthday.

The protest was organised by Rayalaseema Saguneeti Sadhana Samithi (RSSS), which demands the Centre to pay heed towards the agrarian plight in the region.

The RSSS has demanded the central government to develop irrigation infrastructure, to aid the farmers in the drought-prone areas. The outfit’s president Bojja Dasarah Reddy, while speaking to reporters, said despite their numerous pleas, the government has failed to address the issue of “disproportionate water allocation”.

Contrary to the popular perception, he said, the Rayalseema region is not prone to drought. More than 1,000 tmc ft of water passes through the region through major rivers such as Krishna and Penna, along with their tributaries Tungabhadra, Vedavati, Handr, Chitravathi, Kundu and Bahuda, Reddy added.

However, the water is not retained for agricultural purpose in Rayalaseema region, the RSSS chief claims.

Among demands listed by the agrarian group, includes the expedited completion of Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari canal projects, an agricultural university in Rayalseema, along with railway zone at Guntakal. For non-agrarian section of the economy, the RSSS has appealed the government to set-up the the steel plant at Kadapa at the earliest.
