A 13-year-old school girl was washed away in Bhavani river at Mettupalayam on Wednesday while taking bath. The deceased has been identified as Gokila, 13, daughter of Ravi from Amburpettai near Vaniyampadi in Vellore district.
According to police, the girl was in Mettupalayam to spend the vacation at her relative's house. She went to take bath along with two of her relatives. None of them could swim.
Gokila was a Class 8 student at a school in Vaniyampadi. She came to Mettupalayam three days ago to visit her relative M Ramu's house at Shankar Nagar.
On Wednesday, the minor girl and two of her relatives went to the river to wash cloths and take bath. The water current was very strong and she was washed away in the river. Her relatives raised an alarm and the locals immediately rushed to the spot and tried to rescue her.
Meanwhile, Mettupalayam police reached the spot and retrieved the body from the river near VOC Street in Mettupalayam.The body was taken to the Government Hospital, Mettupalyam, for post-mortem. It was handed over to relatives of the deceased on Thursday morning.
The Mettupalayam police have registered a case in this connection and further investigation is on.
