JACTO-GEO strike enters straight seventh day, memorandum served on striking teachers by Education Department.

Even as the Madras High Court has taken a stern view of the ongoing strike by JACTO-GEO as it entered the straight seventh day today, the protesters unmindful of the warning has continued on with their protests all over the state.

The striking teachers staged a novel protest with a begging bowl and wore a “Naamam” on their foreheads in the city as they stayed put infront of Collectorate campus.

Adding teeth to the protests they have lent their support to anti-NEET agitators and slogans were raised in support of abolition of NEET.

The striking teachers staging a sit in dharna have kept a night vigil and refused to go home and stayed overnight in the protest venue itself pressing for their charter of demands.

However the District administration have been sending memorandum under section 17-B of the service rule to the striking teachers. The memos have been served by CEO and DEOs to the head masters of respective Government schools, seeking explanation for abstinence from work and it asked the moot question of why they cannot be placed under temporary suspension for dereliction of duty.

It may be recalled that the Madras High Court which heard a PIL on the ongoing strike raised some moot questions. Justice Kirubakaran even warned that the salary deductions would be done from teacher’s salaries to compensate the affected students who are at the receiving end due to the absence of teacher working in government schools.

The Court has also directed Tamilnadu Government to file an affidavit on the punitive action taken on the striking teachers to contain their protests and agitations, being witnessed all over the state. .

“While the teachers are endowed with the huge responsibility of the raising the next generation, they often indulge in strike and public protests, which is an annoying factor. Teachers medical fraternity and Police should not indulge in public strikes as it would affect the society badly”, the judge observed.
