This morning, the city corporation carried out a major eviction operation in Vellalore RajaVaaikal a major channel through which water reaches the Vellalore lake.
Earth movers have been pressed into service, and the encroachments evicted by corporation, Police and revenue officials.
The banks of the Noyyal River was encroached upon for decades and tenements have mushroomed in the banks clogging the free flow of the river which inturn leads to flooding of the neighbourhoods in and around the city.
“The government has allocated tenements to the evicted families and they will be relocated to Vellalore, where the Tamilnadu Slum Clearance Board has constructed tenements for them” Corporation officials said.
