1,300 army men to be deployed in city for poll

Coimbatore: Close to 1,300 paramilitary officials would soon be deployed here as part of security arrangements ahead of the polls. Officials said they would also be involved in vehicle checks and their primary duty would be to guard polling booths across the city. A Amalraj, city police commissioner, said the forces would reach in the first week of May. They would stay here until the polling gets over and election results are announced.

While the city police department will get four companies, with 110 officials in each company, the rural police department has sought nine companies. "Generally, the strength of each company would be between 80 and 110," said Amalraj.

The officials had identified over 22 locations that were declared as critical polling booths and the force would be posted in these locations. R V Ramya Bharathi, superintendent of police, said that in the district they had identified 126 critical, vulnerable and cluster polling booth locations.
