The first edition of the 'Conference on Logistics' was organised today by CII Coimbatore. R Dinesh, Deputy Chairman, CII Southern Region and Managing Director, TVS Logistics Services Ltd was the Chief Guest for the Conference.
The conference featured sessions on topics like Outbound Logistics in Tier II cities, Global trends in packaging, Freight Management and also the impact of GST in Logistics.

Vineet Agarwal, Managing Director, Transport Corporation of India delivered the Keynote Address. Ramesh Babu, Convenor – Manufacturing Panel, CII Coimbatore Zone set the context for the conference proceedings.
S Narayanan, Chairman, CII Coimbatore Zone welcomed the dignitaries and delegates. He threw light on the gamut of value-
added services provided by logistic service providers which is increasing day by day.
"Logistics sector is really serving as an enabler for the development of all other dependent sectors", Narayanan said.
"With about 1000 crore contribution from businesses in this region, the logistic sector will form the basis for changing the perception about quality among the industry members, the aspect that forms the basis for this conference" said Ramesh Babu, Convenor – Manufacturing Panel, CII Coimbatore Zone.
Delivering his keynote address, Vineet Agarwal, stated that the term ‘Logistics’ which was earlier used in military and defence establishments across the countries have slowly moved into business boardroom discussions, exemplifying the importance the sector has garnered".
He mentioned that Logistics in the current scenario serves as the base for Nation Building. With the maturity levels shown by service providers and the users of logistic services, the sector is witnessing transformation. He stated that the present Government has been proactive in terms of building infrastructure services for the future rather, evident from the merger of the Ministry of Surface Transport and Ministry of Shipping. He added that the Government is working towards enabling a multi-modal shift (including Rail, Road and Sea) in the logistics sector.
On the policy front, he mentioned that, Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime will certainly bring in a nodal shift to this sector enabling the companies to take advantage of the ‘Real’ Hub and Spoke Model and warehouse consolidation. He added that logistics will play a critical role in the nation’s growth towards a formal economy.

On the consumption front, he mentioned that, the consumer trends are changing towards a more digital and lifestyle related products. He mentioned that City-based Logistics growth aiming at prompt delivery of goods and services is imminent. He signed off mentioning that, the industry is confident towards a positive upshift with the development framework already set by the Government.
Delivering the Chief Guest Address, R Dinesh, Deputy Chairman, CII Southern Region mentioned that the logistics sector in the country is getting genuinely segmented with increasing role for Third Party Logistic Service providers. Earlier the Logistics was seen as an infrastructure based service, however, the present situation entails Supply Chain, which logistics is a part of, becoming an absolute yet differential part of a business.
He added that though factors like higher initial cost, skill set, reluctance may prevent an organisation in engaging a 3PL service provider, it can excel and also can become a best- in-class organisation through outsourcing their logistic service to a knowledgeable partner selected through proper dialogue, defining cost and value expected from outsourcing.
On the aspect of CII – Institute of Logistics, he mentioned that CII is working closely with the Government in creating a Nodal agency at the Government level towards effecting changes in the way the sector is looked at presently, largely integral than as a differential.
"CII is working on a major study towards bringing in a common system in terms of data usage and data availability in the Logistics sector, which will enable the sector to benchmark itself to global standards. He also mentioned that such a study will also help in bringing reduction in overall logistic cost in the industry" he added.
On a closing note, Dinesh, Deputy Chairman, CII Southern Region signed off by mentioning that, Coimbatore is the key market where CII will look into from both service provider and user perspectives in imparting skill training.
