Five years rigorous imprisonment for murdering friend

A Coimbatore Court on Monday convicted a 30-year-old man and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for murdering his friend in a drunken brawl. The accused A. Raja alias Rajkumar (28-years-old two years ago) of Venkatesha Nagar in Neelikonampalayam and the victim Nagaraj (38) also from the same locality were painters.

It is learnt that Raja lent money to Nagaraj and the latter delayed returning it. They were not in good terms over the issue and they quarrelled near Venkatesha Theatre at Neelikonampalayam on April 14, 2014.

“Later that day, Raja hit Nagaraj on his head with a log. The victim was hospitalised and he succumbed to injuries on April 17,” Additional Public Prosecutor V.V. Nagarajan said.

On completion of the trial, First - Additional District Judge M. Christopher cited that the charge of murder was proved but death of Nagaraj was due to an injury that was not caused with an intent to murder him. A fine of Rs. 500 was also imposed on him.
