Every year, Tree Trust, an NGO carries out various activities in conserving the environment and forests on World Earth Day. This year the organisation joined hands with the KPR IAS Academy and took the initiative to clean up plastics from a part of the city.
About 220 students from the academy participated. The campaign rally started from the academy premises and went up to Gandhi Park.
The residents of the locality welcomed the initiative and joined the students in clearing plastic bags from roads. “The objective of the initiative is to make people aware of the fact that the use of plastics is a threat to the environment,” said M Yoganathan, the trustee of the NGO. He expressed his concern over the unusual scorching heat in Coimbatore and claimed that the environment can be brought back to normal if every individual plants at least one sapling in the city.
By the end of the event, the participants, along with the local residents came forward and took an oath to reduce the use of anything that is made of plastic.
