Recent spike in power cuts leave residents worried

Power cuts in the city have gone up in the past one week, said residents. While certain locations faced a one hour power cut daily for the past four days, some other areas faced cuts that lasted a few minutes. Tangedco officials clarified that these were not part of scheduled shut downs and were mainly due to some minor fault in the line and repair works.

"There are no shut downs apart from the monthly maintenance, of which residents are informed in advance," said a senior Tangedco official. They have begun generating wind power as well he said and in the past few days they generated over 700MW of wind energy.

Tangedco officials said that they were able to meet the demand of 14,538MW in the city. 50MW was being generated from solar powered panels. And 700 MW was generated from wind mills. "We are in a very good position this summer. Wind energy generation has begun and we are sure that we can manage the summer without any major shut downs," said an official.

Residents of Krishna Colony in Singanallur complained of one-hour power cuts daily, for the past four days. Residents of Vilankurichi also face a one hour shut down daily. "Since we have a generator, we are not affected by this shut down but the fact is that the power cuts are taking place," said a resident of Vilankurichi. Residents of Vadavalli, R S Puram and Sai Baba Colony said that in their area they faced only intermittent power cuts. "While there is no shut down we faced power cuts for 10-15 minutes for over a week now," said Sneha of R S Puram.

Junior engineers said that most power cuts were because of some problems in the lines and power cables. "Most of the cables are being shifted underground as part of the project to take cables underground. Because of this, some areas are facing power cuts," said an official. He ensured that the city would not face a power crisis.
