Railway plans access ways in NMR section for rescue work

Facilities at Mettupalayam and Coonoor railway stations inspected

Southern Railway General Manager Vashista Johiri on Friday told reporters that Southern Railway was planning to create routes for accessing the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) tracks at two places for ensuring easy reach for rescue and relief operations whenever the section witnesses landslips.

Accompanied by Divisional Railway Manager of Salem Division– Subhranshu, Mr. Johiri was at Udhagamandalam to take part in the Railway Engineers’ Conference. He earlier inspected the Mettupalayam and Coonoor railway stations.

Stating that efforts are on to improve the coaches used in NMR, he added that the NMR has seven locomotives.

To a query on operating special trains during summer season, Mr. Johiri said that the feasibility for the same would be explored for the next summer season.

Asked about creation of parking facility at Coonoor railway station, Mr. Johiri said that materials used for track maintenance have been stocked at the vacant space in Coonoor station and once the works are over, the idea of creating parking space would be examined.

He also added that landslip prone stretches in the NMR section are being identified and preventive measures would be initiated.

In addition to enabling easy reach, and quick rescue, relief and restoration operations during landslips, access ways would be created at two places in the NMR ghat section, he added.
