Dengue fever outbreak: 19 dead in Coimbatore

In the past two months, dengue fever has claimed 19 lives in the city. As the fever is spreading at a rapid level, the people of the city are struck in panic, as yesterday two people were reported dead due to dengue.

Krishnamoorthy (43) from Ganapathi and Pushpalatha (28) from Pollachi who were under treatment at the Government Hospital (GH) lost their lives to dengue. Everyday, the GH is recording more and more dengue cases and suspects. As mostly, the affluent choose to visit private hospitals for dengue treatment, hence it's indeed very difficult to ascertain the exact numbers of the patients undergoing dengue treatment in the city.

The sudden uprise of dengue fever has urged those suffering from mild fever to opt for take blood tests to ascertain the nature of the illness.

"Even today, there is water stagnation in the city after every shower. The issue has not been addressed by the authorities. Water stagnation is an imperative reason for spread of dengue fever. Mixed along with sewage water, the stagnated water becomes an ultimate spot for mosquito breeding", alleged a resident of Ganapathi.

Health activists in the city allege that the apathy of the Corporation to perform cleanliness drive in low-lying areas and slums is one of the reason for dengue. "The city corporation has to expedite the process to find a realistic solution for the proper disposal of waste in and around the cities to avoid such outbreaks", they say.
