A wedding invite to vote

That India is wedded to democracy is a given. That people celebrate the wedding anniversary by voting almost once in five years is also a given.

To celebrate the anniversary in Tamil Nadu on May 16, a wedding invitation has been prepared. Returning Officer of the Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency A. Muniyandi has printed the invitation in traditional Tamil style appealing to voters to cast their votes.

The invitation says that in Dhurmukhi (the current Tamil year) year on the third day of Vaikasi (Tamil month), on Monday and the 10th phase of moon, in the auspicious time – between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. – voters are welcome to exercise their franchise in the respective polling booth.

It also says, in typical Tamil custom, that the voters will do well participate in the voting process with their near and dear ones.

The invitation says that Collector and District Election Officer Archana Patnaik and he, Mr. Muniyandi, are the ones extending it to the voters. And, finally, it also says that receiving or giving gifts for the festival is against law.

There is an RSVP too at the bottom.

Mr. Muniyandi says that he took the cue from an invitation sent to him on a social networking platform. He has tweaked it to suit his needs, took the approval from the Collector and has started distribution from Monday.

The response has been good, he adds.

Village Administrative Officer A. Ramanathan, who is distributing the invitation, says that people pause for a while, take time to read thoroughly the invitation and smile.

Sometimes, they have a word of appreciation as well.
