Aadi Perukku celebrated with religious fervour near Sacred tanks and rivers.


Aadi Perukku, the Aadi monsoon festival celebrated on the 18th day of Tamil month Aadi was celebrated with religious fervor as new weds thronged temple tanks in the city.



The festival pays tribute to water’s life -sustaining properties and also to those departed. And, newlyweds throng the beds of sacred rivers and ponds with puja items to celebrate the festival. The festival is celebrated is a very authentic at the beds of river cauvery and its tributaries, Bhavani and Noyyal including all temple sacred tanks.



On this auspicious day of Aadi 18, it's a tradition that the newlyweds pray to Goddess Amman to grant them a healthy and happy married life. As a traditional practice, the couple jointly leave their marriage garlands in sacred rivers or tanks adjoining temples. The newlyweds also tie turmeric coated threads (manjal kayeru) in the presence of their husbands while the unmarried tie the same to their wrists.



Those couples, who have lost their new borns due to illness and other factors offer special prayers for the departed souls to rest in peace. On a banyan leaf, eatables mostly traditional sweets like murukku, then mittai, Seeni mittai, a set of black bangles along with a red piece of cloth are offered to the "Kannimar Gods" to keep the souls of the departed happy. The offerings are then left at the sacred river or tank in memory of the departed ones.
