Water crisis worsens as mercury rises in Coimbatore

Residents in several pockets of the city are still taking part in protests as the water supply from the Siruvani is shrinking.

On Wednesday, residents of Periyar Nagar and Kalaignar Karunanidhi Nagar approached the civic body to resolve the erratic water supply issue.

Officials said that the main reason for the water crisis is the low water level at the Siruvani dam. The dam's water has reduced by 15ft.

"Last year, on the same day, the level of the dam was 869.72m while this year it is 866.70m. Only if the water level increases by at least 1m, we can improve supply to the city," said an engineer.

Officials said that another major issue was the power shut down at Pillur dam.

"For the last four days there have been shut downs at the Pillur pumping station affecting the water supply in several pockets in the city. We are trying our best to rectify the situation. We have worked out a plan along with the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board such that water supply would not be a problem till May 25," said an official. The civic body officials had hired more than 110 private lorries last year to meet the water requirements of the city.

"Even this year, wherever required, we are sending water lorries. We will manage this summer if the residents also ration and use the water. There will be no major water supply shortage. The problem is only with the water distribution and power issues at Pillur dam," said an official. He added that in some areas even repair work was affecting water supply.

Senior corporation engineer said that rainfall is predicted after May 27 and also during the first week of June. "We hope the monsoon will set in early this year. Generally, it begins after June 15," said the official.
