Rao takes charge, retires same day

The rigmarole of taking over a post and retiring almost immediately was carried out so that beleaguered IPS officer H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao could obtain pension befitting his post.

On Monday, Mr. Rao took charge at the headquarters of the fire force at Ulsoor. A few minutes later, he retired from the police force which he had served for 32 years.

For this brief period, DGP Internal Security Neelmani Raju, who held concurrent charge of the fire force, was relieved of the post. She will, however, resume her duties from Tuesday.

Senior police officers said the symbolic gesture would ensure that Mr. Rao would retire from the post of Director General of Police (in this case, DGP and Commandant of Home Guards, ex-Officio Director of Fire Force).

In mid-July, he had been transferred out of the post of DGP (Prisons), but was not allotted a post. Bureaucratically, retiring without a post would cause problems in receiving pension, said a police officer.

Mr. Rao had been transferred after a report by the then DIG (Prisons), D. Roopa, alleged that he had taken bribes to ensure a comfortable stay for jailed Tamil Nadu politician Sasikala. A retired IAS officer has been appointed to probe the allegations, but the report is yet to be submitted to the State government.
