Fire extinguishing and rescue drills were among various awareness programmes organised by the fire and rescue services department in the city as part of the national fire safety week observance that concluded on Wednesday.

The theme for the observance this year is ‘Prevent Fire Accidents, Promote Nation’s Development’.

The observance began on April 14, with Joint Director of Fire Services (West Zone) M. Shahul Hameed paying homage to fire fighters who died while rescuing victims. On Monday, a rescue drill was held at GKNM hospital.

A fire broke in one of the blocks in the hospital and an alarm was raised.

Firemen evacuated the building, took the patients to safety and demonstrated the fire fighting methods.

On Tuesday, department personnel performed a drill at the railway junction along with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on putting out flamed that were fuelled by oil and gas.

Lectures on fire safety were organised at leading textile outlets in Gandhipuram and schools and fuel stations in the city.

Pamphlets were also distributed to public. Similar awareness programmes were organised by all the eight fire stations across the district during the seven-day observance.
