Troubled by sewage leak, Kottai residents cry for help

Troubled by sewage leak for more than a year, residents of the Appa Rawthar Lane on Vincent Road at Kottai Medu in Coimbatore, are forced to clean the leak by themselves as the civic body has turned a deaf ear to their pleas.

According to K.A. Amman Ulla, a resident of the area, as one of the drainage pipes was broken during construction of a wall, drainage water began to stagnate in the area.  Frustrated with the lack of response from the civic body, the residents of the area took the issue into their hands and started to clean whenever there was stagnation.

“There are around 10 houses in the lane and the leakage is creating a major health concern in the area. Hence, we started to clean it ourselves but it was not easy” he added.

Johara, another resident said that the issue turned real bad when there was rain.  Even then the residents attempted to hire workers to clean, the cost being another issue.

“First of all, this should be done by the Corporation, but we are doing it  ourselves,” she said.

However, when media tried reaching the Councillor of Ward 82 under which the area comes, he was not available for comment.
