71-year old Ramnath Kovind, was sworn in as the 14 President of India in a ceremony held in central hall of parliament by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.
He is the 14th incumbent as President of India and a second Dalit to adorn the top constitutional position after K.R. Narayanan. Ramnath Kovind, happened to be the first BJP -nominated President and he has defeated Meera Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker nominated by the Congress- led opposition parties.
A lawyer by profession, Ramnath Kovind, was Governor of Bihar before he was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to run for the President.
He was a Rajyasabha MP for two consecutive terms and served the upper house till March 2006. Kovind is a BJP politician and a champion of the downtrodden and he hails from a humble farming family.
The dalit leader has famously recalled after being elected to the country’s top office as to how he had to share space in a small hut in rural Kanpur along with his family members when he was child.
