Coimbatore Corporation Completes Sterilization of 42,300 Street Dogs

Coimbatore Corporation has sterilized 42,300 out of 1.11 lakh estimated street dogs. Four NGOs are working towards a target of 2,000 monthly surgeries. The Animal Birth Control program is being implemented intensively to manage the stray dog population humanely.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation is implementing the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program intensively and continuously to control the street dog population and ensure their welfare in a scientific and humane manner.

Out of the total estimated 1,11,074 dogs in the Coimbatore Corporation area, sterilization surgery has been performed on approximately 42,300 dogs so far. The Corporation has planned comprehensive measures to perform sterilization surgery on the remaining 68,774 dogs as well.



Currently, four Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are working full-time in collaboration with the Corporation, conducting sterilization surgeries for street dogs. At present, approximately 1,400 dogs are being sterilized every month.

The Corporation, under the leadership of Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, is taking intensive action to increase this number and achieve the target of sterilizing 2,000 dogs per month starting this month itself.

According to the Corporation, the main objective of this program is to control the street dog population in a scientific and humane manner while ensuring the welfare of both the public and community dogs.

The ABC program aims to create a balance between managing stray dog numbers and maintaining animal welfare standards. The initiative reflects the Corporation's commitment to addressing civic challenges through sustainable and compassionate approaches.
