Coimbatore District Dams Record Increased Water Levels Following Southwest Monsoon Rainfall

Three major dams in Coimbatore district - Aliyar, Parambikulam, and Sholayar - have recorded rising water levels due to continuous inflow from southwest monsoon rainfall in their catchment areas. Water discharge operations are underway at all three reservoirs as of July 21.

Coimbatore: Three major dams in Coimbatore district have witnessed significant water level increases following continuous rainfall in their catchment areas during the ongoing southwest monsoon season, according to Water Resources Department officials.

The Aliyar Dam, located near Anaimalai, has a total storage capacity of 120 feet. As of July 21, the water level in the reservoir stands at 56.4 feet, with an inflow of 288 cubic feet per second. The dam is currently releasing 350 cubic feet of water per second to manage the increased storage.

The Parambikulam Dam, situated near Pollachi, has a maximum capacity of 72 feet. Due to the persistent southwest monsoon rainfall in the catchment areas, the water level has risen to 20.38 feet as of July 21. The dam is receiving a substantial inflow of 1,236 cubic feet per second, while releasing 910 cubic feet per second.

Meanwhile, the Sholayar Dam in Valparai, which has a storage capacity of 160 feet, has recorded a water level of 86.76 feet as of July 21. The reservoir is experiencing an inflow of 416 cubic feet per second from the catchment areas due to monsoon rainfall. Water discharge from the dam stands at 1,357 cubic feet per second, officials from the Water Resources Department reported.

The continuous inflow into all three reservoirs indicates healthy monsoon activity in the Western Ghats region, which serves as the primary catchment area for these dams. The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring the water levels and adjusting discharge rates accordingly to ensure optimal storage while maintaining safety standards.

These dams play a crucial role in meeting the irrigation and drinking water needs of several districts in Tamil Nadu, making the current water level improvements particularly significant for farmers and residents in the region.
