Coimbatore Civic Worker's Honesty: Returns 1.5 Sovereign Gold Jewellery Found in Garbage to Rightful Owner

Murugan, a sanitation worker collecting waste in Central Zone Ward 68 of Coimbatore, discovered 1.5 sovereign gold jewellery mistakenly disposed in garbage. Displaying exemplary honesty, he handed over the ornament to its rightful owner Alima in the presence of Corporation officials, earning widespread appreciation.


Coimbatore: An act of exemplary honesty by a sanitation worker in Coimbatore Corporation has earned widespread appreciation from residents and officials alike. Murugan, a contract sanitation worker engaged in waste collection in the Sivanandha Colony area under Central Zone, discovered 1.5 sovereign gold jewellery that had been mistakenly disposed in garbage and promptly returned it to its rightful owner.

Coimbatore Corporation is divided into five zones - East, West, North, South and Central - covering 100 wards. Sanitation workers continuously carry out door-to-door collection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste across all households in these wards.

On July 10, 2026, routine waste collection was underway in Sivanandha Colony and VCK Layout area falling under Ward Number 68 of the Central Zone. During this operation, contract sanitation worker (SWMS) Murugan, aged 40, was going from house to house collecting waste as per his daily routine.

While carrying out his waste collection duties, Murugan noticed that 1.5 sovereign gold jewellery had been mistakenly disposed in the garbage he had collected. He immediately informed his superiors - Sanitary Supervisor Karthikeyan and Zonal Sanitary Inspector Saravanakumar - about the discovery.

Upon receiving the information, Corporation officials rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry. During the investigation, they identified the owner of the gold jewellery as Alima, a 54-year-old woman. Subsequently, sanitation worker Murugan handed over the 1.5 sovereign gold jewellery that was mistakenly found in the garbage to its owner Alima in the presence of Corporation officials.

The honest act of sanitation worker Murugan has received praise from the public and Corporation authorities. Members of the public have stated that the integrity displayed by an ordinary waste collection worker serves as an exemplary model for others to follow.
