The Tamil Nadu Government has approved the production of free Pongal dhotis and sarees with gold and silver-coloured zari borders for the 2027 Pongal festival under its welfare scheme. Welcoming the move, the Tamil Nadu Federation of Weavers' Associations said the initiative would generate sustained employment for thousands of handloom weavers.
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government has issued a Government Order (G.O.) approving the production of free dhotis and sarees featuring gold and silver-coloured zari borders under its Pongal welfare scheme, drawing appreciation from the Tamil Nadu Federation of Weavers' Associations.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the Federation said the initiative would not only enhance the livelihood of handloom weavers but also ensure that all ration card holders across the State receive newly designed, high-quality festive clothing for Pongal 2027.
As per the Government Order, 1,77,64,000 sarees will be produced in new designs and colours with improved quality and gold and silver-coloured zari borders. Additionally, 1,77,22,000 washed, premium-quality dhotis in new designs will be manufactured under the scheme.
The Federation noted that the project, with an estimated outlay of ₹642 crore, includes an initial advance allocation of ₹300 crore to commence production, ensuring continuous employment for thousands of handloom weavers across Tamil Nadu.
Welcoming the decision, the Federation expressed its gratitude to the Chief Minister for issuing the Government Order aimed at strengthening the handloom sector and safeguarding the livelihood of weavers. It also thanked the Minister for Handlooms and Textiles and senior officials of the department for facilitating the implementation of the scheme.
According to the Federation, the initiative represents a significant step towards modernising the State's free Pongal dhoti-saree scheme by introducing improved designs, superior quality and attractive zari borders. It added that the scheme would create sustained employment opportunities for the weaving community while ensuring the timely distribution of festive garments to beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu.
