Coimbatore:

A plantation drive to plant 10,000 tree saplings under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding was inaugurated by Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar at Kondampatti Panchayat in Kinathukadavu Panchayat Union.

The programme was attended by Block Development Officers Mohan Babu, Rajasekumar, Saravanan and Kala Rani, Lionel Paul David, Chief Human Resources Officer of Water Tech, officials of the voluntary organisation, government officials and students from Eshwar Engineering College.

Speaking on the occasion, the District Collector said the district administration has been continuously implementing various initiatives to promote environmental conservation and sustainable natural resource management. As part of these efforts, an afforestation project is being implemented at Kondampatti through the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department with support from Water Tech.

He said the initiative also includes groundwater recharge measures, rainwater harvesting systems, restoration of unused borewells and the creation of new water conservation infrastructure. The previously unused land is being transformed into a productive green space for environmental and community benefit.

The Collector further said adequate irrigation facilities have been created to ensure the healthy growth of the saplings. Fodder crops will also be cultivated in the area and supplied to local farmers to support livestock farming.

He encouraged the students who participated in the programme to monitor the growth of the saplings and actively contribute to environmental conservation. He also urged them to revisit the site after a year to assess the progress of the plantation and the overall impact of the project.

Earlier, the District Collector inspected the desilting works carried out over 3.55 acres of a pond at Thegani in Pachapalayam Panchayat under Sultanpet Panchayat Union. He reviewed the project and discussed its role in improving groundwater recharge and benefiting surrounding agricultural lands.
