Southwest Monsoon Raises Inflows to Key Western Tamil Nadu Dams

Continuous inflows from southwest monsoon rains have increased water levels in major dams including Aliyar, Parambikulam, Sholayar, Amaravathi and Thirumoorthy, according to Water Resources Department officials on June 10.

Coimbatore:

Continuous rainfall in the catchment areas under the influence of the southwest monsoon has improved inflows and water storage levels in several major dams serving Coimbatore, Tiruppur and surrounding regions.

The Aliyar Dam near Anaimalai, which has a full reservoir level of 120 feet, recorded a water level of 65.5 feet as of June 10. The inflow into the dam stood at 150 cubic feet per second (cusecs), while 280 cusecs of water was being released from the reservoir.

The Parambikulam Dam near Pollachi, with a storage capacity of 72 feet, recorded a water level of 20.63 feet. Owing to sustained inflows from the dam’s catchment areas, the reservoir received 349 cusecs of water, while 675 cusecs was being discharged.

At Valparai, the Sholayar Dam, which has a full capacity of 160 feet, registered a water level of 45.38 feet. Water inflow into the reservoir was recorded at 1,393 cusecs, while 5 cusecs was being released, according to Water Resources Department officials.

In neighbouring Tiruppur district, the Amaravathi Dam, with a full reservoir level of 90 feet, recorded a water level of 37.04 feet on June 10. The inflow into the dam stood at 532 cusecs. Officials said water release details were being updated.

The Thirumoorthy Dam near Udumalpet, which has a storage capacity of 60 feet, recorded a water level of 43.81 feet. The dam received an inflow of 556 cusecs, while 911 cusecs of water was being released.

Water Resources Department officials said the continued southwest monsoon activity in the Western Ghats catchment areas has contributed to the steady rise in water storage levels across these reservoirs.
