The Salem Division of Southern Railway observed World Environment Day today with a series of environment-focused activities across the division. Awareness programmes were organized at railway stations, colonies, depots, and other field units, with active participation from railway staff and passengers.

Coimbatore: Salem: The Salem Division of Southern Railway celebrated World Environment Day with a wide range of activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices among railway employees, passengers, students, and the general public.

As part of a special campaign conducted from May 15 to June 5 with a focus on climate change, awareness programmes were organized across railway stations, colonies, depots, and various field units under the division. Participants were sensitized to key environmental issues, including climate change mitigation, waste management, reduction of single-use plastics, water and energy conservation, and the adoption of sustainable practices in daily life.

The highlight of the day’s events was a plantation drive held at the East Railway Colony in Salem. The initiative was led by R. Saravanan, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), along with railway officials and staff members, who planted saplings to reinforce the division’s commitment to a greener future.

An awareness rally was subsequently flagged off from the Divisional Railway Manager’s Office and proceeded to Salem Junction. The rally emphasized the importance of environmental protection and encouraged the public to adopt eco-friendly habits.

Upon reaching Salem Junction, railway personnel took a pledge to make environmentally conscious choices in their daily lives and to inspire others to do the same. Adding a creative touch to the celebrations, a street play was performed at the station, conveying messages on environmental conservation and sustainable living to passengers and visitors.

The event concluded with the distribution of certificates and prizes to railway staff, students, and other participants who made notable contributions to the campaign, recognizing their efforts in spreading awareness and supporting environmental initiatives.

Through activities ranging from tree plantation drives to awareness rallies and street plays, the Salem Division reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development on the occasion of World Environment Day.
