Coimbatore District Officials Inspect Canal Desilting Works Across City Zones

Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar IAS and Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran IAS inspected ongoing canal desilting works in multiple zones. The initiative follows Chief Minister's directives to ensure unobstructed rainwater flow across the city's drainage network.


Coimbatore: District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar IAS and Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran IAS conducted field inspections of the ongoing canal desilting works being undertaken across various zones of Coimbatore Corporation limits.



Following the guidance of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, comprehensive desilting operations are being carried out in rainwater drainage channels and canals within Coimbatore Corporation areas to ensure unobstructed flow of rainwater during monsoon seasons. The officials personally visited multiple locations to review the progress of these crucial works.



In the East Zone, at Trichy Road Weavers Colony Pattanam Itteri area, the officials inspected desilting work being carried out along a 2.3-kilometer stretch of the water supply canal. The Corporation has undertaken removal of water hyacinths and overgrown bushes that had obstructed the canal, ensuring smooth water flow during rainy seasons.



The inspection team subsequently visited the Central Zone, Ward No. 80, where similar desilting operations are underway at Selvasindhamani Lake. The officials reviewed the removal of water hyacinths from the lake and examined the desilting work along the Rajavaykal canal that connects Selvasindhamani Lake to Ukkadam Periyakulam, spanning approximately 1.7 kilometers.



During the inspection, the District Collector and Corporation Commissioner instructed officials to expedite the canal desilting works across all locations. They emphasized the importance of completing these operations before the onset of monsoon rains to prevent waterlogging and flooding in residential areas.



The inspection was attended by several Corporation officials including Chief Engineer Vijayakumar, Assistant Commissioner Dakshinamurthy, Assistant Executive Engineers Kumaresan, Thirukalyanaasundaram, and Yogasithra. Assistant Engineers Nagendhiran and Ms. Roja, along with other Corporation staff, were also present during the field visits.



These proactive measures are part of the city's comprehensive monsoon preparedness strategy, aimed at enhancing the drainage infrastructure and preventing urban flooding during heavy rainfall periods.
