22-Year-Old's Organ Donation Gives New Life to Three Patients After Brain Death

A 22-year-old youth from Tiruppur district donated his organs after being declared brain dead following a two-wheeler accident. His liver and kidneys were transplanted to three patients in Coimbatore and Salem hospitals, giving them a new lease of life.


Coimbatore: In a heartwarming gesture amid tragedy, the family of a 22-year-old youth who was declared brain dead after a road accident decided to donate his organs, giving a new lease of life to three patients.

Karuppusamy, a resident of Venchamadai area near Udumalaipettai in Tiruppur district, met with an unexpected accident on the morning of May 10. While riding his two-wheeler, he suddenly fell down and sustained severe head injuries.

He was immediately rushed to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite receiving intensive treatment, doctors declared him brain dead as the treatment proved unsuccessful.

In this hour of grief, Karuppusamy's family members came forward with a noble decision to donate his organs. The organ harvesting procedure was conducted under the guidance of Tamil Nadu Organ Transplantation Authority.

His liver was donated to a private hospital in Coimbatore, while one kidney was sent to Salem Government Hospital and the other kidney was transplanted at another private hospital in Coimbatore. These organs gave three critically ill patients a chance at life.

Following the organ harvesting surgery, the hospital Dean, medical officers, and nursing staff paid their respects to Karuppusamy's mortal remains with state honours. His body was then sent to his native place for final rites.

This selfless act by Karuppusamy's family in their moment of immense personal loss has been lauded by the medical community as an exemplary gesture that will inspire many others to pledge their organs and save precious lives.
