Congress Extends Conditional Support to Vijay’s TVK to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

Congress has extended ‘conditional’ support to Vijay’s TVK to form the government in Tamil Nadu, insisting that no communal forces be included in the alliance. The move signals a major political shift after the Assembly election results delivered a fractured mandate.

Chennai: In a major political development following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, the Congress party has announced its support for actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the government in the State. However, the support comes with a clear condition that no “communal forces” should be included in the alliance.

The decision marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics, as the Congress appears to have distanced itself from its long-standing alliance with the DMK after the election verdict delivered a fractured mandate. TVK emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the majority required to independently form the government.

According to Congress leaders, the party’s support is aimed at ensuring that “communal and divisive forces” are kept away from power in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party reportedly held discussions before formally extending support to Vijay-led TVK.

Sources indicate that Vijay personally reached out to Congress leaders seeking support to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. With Congress MLAs backing TVK, Vijay’s camp has moved closer to the required numbers needed to stake claim to form the government.

The move has triggered intense political discussions across the State, as Congress breaking away from its traditional DMK alliance after several decades is being viewed as a historic realignment in Tamil Nadu politics. Political observers believe the development could reshape alliance equations ahead
