Ukkadam Fish Market Witnesses Surge in Seafood Sales Amid Rising Temperatures

As temperatures soar in Coimbatore, the Ukkadam integrated fish market experiences booming seafood sales. Non-vegetarian food lovers prefer seafood over chicken during summer, leading to increased demand. Fresh catches arrive daily from Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Kerala coastal regions.

Coimbatore: The scorching summer heat in Coimbatore has triggered an unprecedented surge in seafood sales at the city's popular Ukkadam integrated fish market, with customers increasingly preferring marine fish over other meat varieties.

The Ukkadam integrated fish market receives fresh seafood supplies from various coastal regions including Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, and different parts of Kerala. Since late February, when summer temperatures began climbing, the city has experienced intense heat for over a month now.

Non-vegetarian food enthusiasts have been choosing seafood over chicken, particularly during the hot weather conditions. This shift in consumer preference has resulted in brisk business at the Ukkadam fish market over the past several weeks. On Sunday, a holiday, the market witnessed heavy crowds from early morning hours as customers rushed to purchase fresh catches.

According to Sunday's prices, mackerel was sold at Rs 120 per kilogram, Ayirai at Rs 100, prawns at Rs 350, seer fish at Rs 250, Sankara at Rs 200, Vaval at Rs 250, reef fish at Rs 200, red snapper at Rs 400, and crab at Rs 200. The variety and competitive pricing have attracted buyers from across the city and surrounding areas.

Market vendors reported that the demand for seafood typically increases during summer months as people consider it a healthier and lighter option compared to red meat and chicken during hot weather. The fresh supply chain from multiple coastal regions ensures variety and quality for Coimbatore's seafood lovers.
