Coimbatore Police Warn Youth Against Fake Foreign Job Offers

Following the death of a Coimbatore youth trapped by cyber fraud gang in Cambodia, police are investigating 50 individuals who traveled to Southeast Asian countries for jobs and are now unreachable, raising concerns about human trafficking networks.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have issued a stern warning today about youth falling prey to cyber fraud gangs while seeking employment opportunities in Southeast Asian countries. Police officials stated that incidents of young people being lured to countries like Cambodia and Myanmar with attractive promises of hotel jobs, office work, high salaries, and free accommodation, only to be forced into cyber fraud operations, are increasing alarmingly.

A youth from Coimbatore who traveled to Cambodia for a hotel job was reportedly forced by a gang to participate in cyber fraud activities upon arrival. When he refused, the gang confiscated his passport and subjected him to severe harassment, according to information that has emerged. The youth, whose health deteriorated severely, managed to contact his mother in Coimbatore and informed her about the ordeal he was facing.

Following this, he was rescued with the help of the Indian Embassy and admitted to a hospital. However, police officials stated that despite treatment, he succumbed to his condition. In the wake of this shocking incident, CBCID police have instructed the City Cyber Crime Division to investigate and maintain a list of individuals who traveled to Southeast Asian countries either for work or on tourist visas.

Accordingly, police have so far questioned 140 people from Coimbatore who traveled to Southeast Asian countries for work and on tourist visas. Police have revealed that as 50 more individuals remain unreachable, there is suspicion that they may have been trapped by cyber crime gangs.

Speaking about this, Coimbatore City Police officials said that the list of unreachable individuals will be submitted to the CBCID division, and warned youth not to fall for advertisements promising high salaries, easy work, and free accommodation. Furthermore, police have cautioned that before making decisions about job opportunities in countries like Cambodia and Myanmar, individuals should verify through people already working there or through trusted sources, emphasizing that hasty decisions could even lead to loss of life.
